Bahrain's Major Infrastructure Overhaul: New Road and Sewage Projects to Boost Development

Bahrain is embarking on a major infrastructure overhaul with a series of new road and sewage projects set to be implemented across all governorates. The Works Ministry, under the leadership of Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj, is committed to executing these strategic projects with an emphasis on sustainable development.
The ministry’s role is crucial in supporting the country's expanding urban, developmental, and investment activities. The upcoming and ongoing projects are designed to enhance Bahrain’s road networks, upgrade sewage systems, and strengthen the nation’s overall infrastructure, all in line with the country’s national development objectives.
In addition to building roads and laying pipelines, the projects are aimed at shaping Bahrain’s infrastructure to support economic growth, improve safety, and elevate the quality of life for its citizens.
As of now, 89% of built properties in the Southern Governorate are connected to the main sewage network. In constituency seven of this governorate, full coverage has been achieved. The ministry is actively working to complete the remaining sewer connections in the region.
The selection and execution of these infrastructure projects are guided by the ministry’s pre-established programme, which considers several factors, including the percentage of built properties in the area and the technical readiness for network installation.
Significant progress is being made in improving sanitation infrastructure, particularly in rapidly developing areas, with a continued focus on providing comprehensive coverage while maintaining high technical and sustainability standards.
As part of its multi-phase infrastructure plan, the ministry has outlined several road development initiatives. One key project is the development of Road 847 in Riffa, which is in the preparatory stage. This project will include sidewalks, an advanced rainwater drainage system, upgraded street lighting, underground ducts for future utilities, and updated road signs and safety indicators. The project aims to address the recurring issue of rainwater accumulation in Block 912 in West Riffa, improving road safety and reliability for residents and commuters.
Additionally, the ministry has completed detailed designs for the development of Road 36 in the Al A’ali area, which will be expanded into a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. The project will also upgrade intersections to improve traffic flow and safety. Designs for the rehabilitation of roads in Block 926 (phases one and two) are also finalized, which will involve complete resurfacing of Street 20 and surrounding roads, alongside the installation of pavements and improved sidewalks.
These road projects are part of a comprehensive plan to create safer, smarter, and more resilient roads across Bahrain. Future developments include a temporary road connecting Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway to the Wadi Al Sail Housing Project and another linking the same highway to Wali Al Ahd Highway. These roads will feature rainwater drainage systems, traffic safety features such as speed-reducing humps, enhanced street lighting, underground ducts for future services, and comprehensive signage.
The ministry is prioritizing road safety, efficient rainwater management, and service integration in the design of all new roads, contributing to the overall well-being of the population. With a clear roadmap and ongoing coordination with Parliament and local authorities, the ministry continues to play a vital role in the modernization of Bahrain’s infrastructure, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future.
