Dubai Advances Urban Development with New Initiatives Under 2040 Master Plan

Dubai is embarking on a transformative urban development journey through the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, with significant progress reported by the Supreme Committee for Urban Planning.
During the Committee’s 33rd meeting, chaired by Mattar Al Tayer, key projects and strategies were reviewed to align with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. The initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure, mobility, and overall quality of life while reinforcing Dubai’s status as a leading global city.
Key Urban Initiatives and ProjectsUnder the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, along with His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Dubai is set to launch major urban projects. These initiatives focus on sustainable growth, community well-being, and economic diversification while fostering job creation and social cohesion.
The Committee is also advancing the ‘20-Minute City’ concept and innovative planning strategies while streamlining the approval process for new real estate developments. The newly approved Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) plan seeks to maximize land use around Dubai Metro stations, promoting sustainable transport solutions.
Major Projects Approved in 2024-
Dubai Walk Master Plan: Introducing 6,500 km of pedestrian pathways across 160 areas. The first phase includes:
- Al Ras Loop: A 15-km pedestrian route connecting historic landmarks, with 5 km along the waterfront.
- Future Loop: A 2-km air-conditioned bridge near the Museum of the Future, spanning 30,000 square meters and linking 10 locations.

Super Block Initiative: A pilot program in Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone to enhance pedestrian-friendly zones.

Dubai Metro Blue Line Expansion: A 30-km extension with 14 stations, including an underground section. This project will serve nine residential and development areas, catering to a projected one million residents by 2040.

Therme Dubai Project: A partnership with the private sector to create the world’s longest interactive resort and park, expected to attract 1.7 million visitors annually.

Saih Al-Salam Corridor: Development of five service and recreational stations in rural areas in collaboration with private entities.
Since the Supreme Committee’s establishment in March 2021, several milestones have been achieved, including:
- Planning of 17,400 residential plots for citizens.
- Development of the Urban Planning Law.
- Master Plans for Rural and Desert Areas, Public Beaches, and Green Spaces.
- A 105% increase in green spaces and a 134% expansion in hospitality and tourism activities.
- A 400% expansion of public beaches and a 25% increase in land allocated for education and healthcare.
- An increase in economic zones to 168 square kilometers.
These initiatives reinforce Dubai’s commitment to sustainable development and urban innovation, ensuring a thriving future for residents and visitors alike.
