Dubai Launches AED1.4 Billion Stormwater Infrastructure Upgrade

Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts worth AED1.439 billion for four major projects aimed at developing, expanding, and rehabilitating the emirate’s stormwater drainage network. These initiatives are part of the larger ‘Tasreef’ project, which represents the largest unified stormwater collection system in Dubai and is designed to be the most efficient in the region.
These projects support directives from UAE leadership to build strategic, future-ready infrastructure and align with broader efforts to enhance urban planning standards. The new works will serve key areas including Nad Al Hamar, the vicinity of Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa.
The scope of the upgrades includes over 36 kilometres of new drainage lines that will connect to the main Tasreef tunnel, helping to integrate drainage systems across the emirate. This expansion will significantly boost the network’s capacity in the target zones.
The Tasreef project is a long-term strategic initiative led by Dubai Municipality, with a total estimated cost of AED30 billion. Its goals include increasing the overall discharge capacity of the stormwater system by 700 percent over the next century, reducing construction and maintenance costs by 20 percent, and extending the lifespan of the infrastructure.
These developments underline Dubai’s broader commitment to sustainable, climate-resilient infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a global leader in infrastructure readiness and urban development.
