DWTC Begins First Phase of $2.7 Billion Dubai Exhibition Centre Expansion
Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) has launched the initial phase of expanding the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) at Expo City Dubai, following the completion of preliminary works and piling contracts. This AED10 billion ($2.7 billion) project, approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, will make DEC the largest indoor event venue in the region.
The expansion will increase Dubai's capacity to host large-scale events from 300 to 600 annually by 2033, contributing to the MICE sector's goal of AED54 billion by that year. The project is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, connecting Expo City Dubai, Dubai South, and Al Maktoum International Airport.
Phase one includes 515 piles, 14,000 tonnes of structural steel—equivalent to the weight of two Eiffel Towers—and 48,000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete. The roof will span 78,000 square meters, with phase management led by renowned firms Mace and Egis.
Mahir Julfar, Executive Vice President at DWTC, noted, “The DEC expansion is transformative for Dubai’s MICE sector, solidifying our global position for mega events. By 2033, we will double the number of events from 300 to 600, setting new global standards for exhibitions and conferences.”
This phase will add 64,000 square meters of permanent exhibition space and 30,000 square meters of temporary halls to the existing 46,000 square meters, totaling 140,000 square meters by 2026 and allowing for 50,000 daily visitors.
Amer Al Farsi, Acting Vice President of Real Estate Development at DWTC, highlighted the venue’s sustainable design and LEED certification from the US Green Building Council, noting, “This expansion not only enhances our capacity but redefines the global events industry, with Dubai at the forefront.”
Construction continues in parallel with ongoing events at the current DEC facility, aligning with DWTC’s vision to meet the evolving demands of the global events industry.
