Ras Al Khaimah Named Top Global Expat City for 2024

Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, has been ranked as the best city worldwide for expatriates in 2024, according to InterNations’ Expat Insider report released on Tuesday.

The emirate claimed the top spot among 53 cities globally in the Expat Essentials Index, which evaluates key factors such as housing affordability, digital infrastructure, administrative processes, and language accessibility.

In addition to securing the overall top ranking, Ras Al Khaimah performed exceptionally well in specific categories, placing second in the Working Abroad index and fifth for Ease of Settling In. These rankings reflect the emirate’s rising appeal to expatriates and professionals looking to start a new life abroad.

The survey, conducted by InterNations—representing over 5.4 million expatriates across 420 cities and 166 countries—highlighted that 72% of respondents found securing housing in Ras Al Khaimah easy, significantly surpassing the global average of 45%. Furthermore, 69% of expatriates reported no major challenges with housing, local bureaucracy, or language barriers, compared to a global average of just 29%.

“This recognition underscores our commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and thriving community that attracts talent from around the globe,” said Heba Fatani, Director General of the Ras Al Khaimah Government Media Office (RAKGMO).

As of 2023, Ras Al Khaimah is home to 400,000 residents and boasts a diverse economy, with no single sector contributing more than 30% to its GDP. It has maintained an ‘A’ range credit rating from Fitch and Standard & Poor’s for 15 consecutive years.

The emirate has been proactive in enhancing its appeal to international residents and businesses, launching initiatives like the “Heart of RAK” digital platform to showcase its vibrant lifestyle. Known for its 64-kilometer coastline, vast desert landscapes, and Jebel Jais—the UAE’s highest mountain and home to the world’s longest zipline—the emirate offers a unique blend of natural beauty and modern infrastructure.
